There is an elephant just over the horizon, waiting to rush and to shake the world. It is the Kindle, a new eReader for eBooks at Amazon.com. In its debut, it elevated hopes and sent prognosticators in all states with its unique capabilities and unheard of before abilities. You see, the Kindle has a wireless, super cell-phone network cable in and you can purchase and download a book in less than a minute from almost anywhere in the world. If the Kindle stats are impressive, they seem to be simply new uses for current technology used in a way that changes anything not entirely about paper books, reading or aligned with both.
The creation of the Internet was a CUSP event that really changed the world. Although when he began designing a groan - that later the explosion - it was still something completely new on this old rock we all live on. It has changed completely way we do almost everything in our lives, and still does. Each year something else is added to the internet that changes or replaces another part of our analog world. The Kindle eReader is nothing like the Internet.
The Kindle can replace a shelf or two of paper books. It replaces trips to the bookstore or library. It lightens the load of the backpack any student or researcher. Despite all its strengths, however, it does not come close to replacing a book. Put aside the collector mentality - the need to have your reading material, how they look aligned on a shelf, etc. - It is not a substitute for curling with a book on a couch, or study a at a cafe. Eh Well, it is and there is not. Yes, Kindle is lighter and thinner, so a good hug a rainy afternoon is possible, and yes, the Kindle work in cafes, but not a replacement for a book.
Cutting to the core, the Kindle does not do what he does as well as it could. Take e-mail for example. It was not just another, faster way to send a letter, he transformed and greatly improved delivery information, images, etc. This is not only faster, it's totally reformed on what we had before. Speaking of letters, examine how word processing and spreadsheets turned his ink and paper counterparts on their ears. Microsoft Word or Excel just does not do the same thing but a little better, he was much better than what had come before them.
For example, using the capabilities of the Kindle more complete, readers should be allowed to add content of their own. They should be able to take notes in the margins, passages highlighted, make bookmarks Multiple, and create their own index in the back. Not only is it already what can be done with a book, but the Kindle would be able to make great not beyond. Think of all your notes and highlights. What if the Kindle kept track of them for you? No more searching the small but crucial sentence that you are getting an hour. You simply go to the "My Notes". Now is an improvement.
The Internet or Web 2.0 really is all about social networking, cross-linked information, and user-submitted content. The Kindle might be a perfect fit with the social configurations, cultural and technological. Take notes from the tab above and insert it into our current to do things. Well, you would not want others to be able to see your thoughts, but you would also want to read what others thought of certain part of the book you read.
The Kindle should be able to embrace and enhance this kind of interactivity easily. Perhaps a toggle that lets you switch on notes in the margins, where you can see the scribbles Rated fifty people - Propagation in the world - that put their ideas into the network Kindle. Or more simply, it could simply be a star in the margin that, when clicked, takes you Google to a page filled with thoughts of millions of people on this single sentence. Talk about group collaboration. This can be a meeting of minds that did not really been seen before on the Internet except perhaps Wikipedia.com.
The Kindle has a great potential. It's like an MP3 player before the mini-discs large hard storage or iTunes, yeah, you can make more music with you, but why when you have more than 200 CDs? If the Kindle can maximize its capabilities technology is only then that he had the chance to become widely and commonly used replacement book.
That day, we look down our lighter and say "How in the world do people read without this?" (And there will be 20.000 responses to this sentence margin)
