The amount of advanced technology that goes into the premium today, tires car brand is not always appreciated. Tires, after all, are usually a distress purchase and most consumers are simply "black and round".
Tire technology, however evolving, with a high degree by the technical requirements of car manufacturers, but also to some extent by the demands of a increasingly demanding aftermarket.
The tire can be affected by three things - by changes in the tire structure, altering the tread and varying mixtures of rubber used in tires, particularly in the tread. It is not surprising that Tire manufacturers are leading a variety of proprietary technologies covering all these areas.
Take Bridgestone for example. Currently, the largest global tire manufacturer lists 14 key technologies covering, casing, tread design and compounding. Some of them as the use of unidirectional tread patterns, compounds of silica and rim guards to protect against kerbing damage are common, but some are unique to Bridgestone. Examples of such technologies highlighted by Bridgestone are the following:
Diamond Bead - A new method construction for the reel heel, increasing the torsional rigidity of the reel flange to create a patch for more uniform contact and therefore better handling.
Flat Force Block - A new tread pattern blocks, which varies depending on the angle of the block edges in accordance with their size. This provides a contact pressure more uniform and therefore a smoother ride.
Key Hole Sipes - These narrow slots in the tread increase in width as the tire wears to help maintain tire performance with age.
Multicell compound - An advanced and unique compound based foam, the high porosity of the absorption Anable of water and increased "edge effect" to improve traction on ice.
Riblet - What are micro-circumferential grooves located on the surface of the tire compound multicellular. These aborb a film of water on icy surfaces for better traction, tires are new and before multicellular pores become visible.
If the tire manufacturers continue to evolve their tire technology to gain an advantage competitive rivals, there are certain areas of technology, which come to attention. One of them is undoubtedly the area of rolling flat tires and the surface associated systems for monitoring tire pressure.
The major manufacturers differ to some extent the technology tires they use for their systems run-flat.
Michelin PAX system, for example, includes a wheel with a special asymmetrical profile, This allows a support ring insert, which carries the load of the vehicle and allows it to be oriented at zero pressure.
However, Michelin ZP their system functionality through the stronger sides, reinforced by a special rubber compound to carry the weight of the vehicle. A bead area innovative delpe remain deflated tire on the rim.
Another example of the use of compounding to obtain a stiffer sidewall is Goodyear's Run-On System Flat.
