So you want to be a private detective, but you're not sure if you have the skills and experience? Do not worry not! In this article I will aim to define the essential requirements for anyone hoping to work in this area.
Ex-police officers are often attracted especially by working as private detectives. In general, they tend to be people who have a curious mind, an interest for legal affairs and a desire to see justice done. And it is certainly true that the skills and experience gained in the police (for not to mention contacts) can come in handy for a PI.
Having a criminal record is not an essential, though. Any which potentially can become a private detective. You do not need special skills or qualifications (even if in some U.S. states and in some other country, you will need to apply for a license). The lack of educational qualifications is no barrier to success and certainly not to be male. Many private investigators are women, who tend to predominate in areas Matrimonial and internal company.
Certain characteristics are desirable, though most come with time and experience. Affirmation self and perseverance are important, with a good view (helped by glasses or contact lenses if necessary) and observation skills. In his book 'Secrets of a private detective, he lists the qualities essential for success as diligence, good observation, in preparation, ingenuity, creativity, curiosity, patience and neutrality. Fellow author and experienced Investigator Edward Smith said that the most important features are the objectivity, thoroughness, independence and accuracy.
Persistence is a very important attribute. You could spend days watching the item, simply find the path suddenly turns cold. Much more important is endurance - the ability to continue over long periods without flinching. On a monitor, for example, you may need to remain vigilant long hours of work.
If you have a mix reasonableness of these skills and abilities, then congratulations - you are potentially suitable for working in this exciting and challenging profession.
