Amazon Kindle

Welcome to the wonderful world of the Amazon Kindle e-reader, considered to be the most popular gift in the history of Amazon!

Are you a die-hard paperback reader or an electronic book reader? When the very first Amazon Kindle was launched in the USA in 2007, the complete stock was sold out in just five and a half hours! I think people are well and truly up for a revolutionary new reading device. This is the digital age and as a society we have embraced the advancement of digital technology.

We all now have computers and laptops, mobile phones, iPods and digital cameras! Are we all ready to make the transition from paperback to e-reader? The question currently on everyone’s lips is what kind of reader am I?

Are paper books on the way out? With the popularity of e-readers becoming more evident with the rise in sales figures over the Christmas period, all does not look rosy for our old friend the paperback and its older brother, the hardback. Amazon reported for the first time that sales for electronic books excelled all sales of regular books this year.

Christmas 2009 proved a strong time for the sales of the Amazon Kindle and the frenzy hasn’t stopped there as people continue to rush to purchase books to load onto them.

What is the Amazon Kindle? First launched in the USA, the Amazon Kindle is a platform that allows electronic books (e-books) and other types of digital media to be displayed. An e-book can be loaded into the Kindle and read via a display screen with ‘pages’ turned digitally.

Are there other e-readers on the market today? The Amazon Kindle is in direct competition with a number of other e-readers currently enjoying a piece of the digital reading pie. Other e-readers include the Sony Reader and the Barnes & Noble nook.

The Kindle 2 (international version) was launched in October 2009. Extended to over a hundred countries across the world, many more readers are able to make the switch from paperbacks and hardbacks to an electronic read.

Can any book be purchased in e-reader format for your Amazon Kindle? While many titles can be acquired for your e-reader, there are one or two that are unavailable due to publisher’s rights. Animal Farm and 1984 by George Orwell have recently been withdrawn.

Each Kindle comes complete with the New Oxford American Dictionary as well as the owner’s manual and music can be loaded and played as you read. The Amazon Kindle sounds wonderful but are we really ready to say “No more!” to the good old paperback just yet?
